KILIMANJARO HIKING - UMBWE ROUTE ITINERARY

Umbwe The Umbwe Route is steeper and shorter than the Machame Route. Once you are at the Barranco Hut you continue on with the other Machame climbers. Then descending it's through the Mweka trail.Y

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, meet and great then transfer to your hotel in Moshi, briefing about your hiking trip by our guide.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate To Umbwe Camp

Hiking Hours: 6 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Early breakfast then depart from Moshi Town and drive for several hours to the Umbwe Gate. Commence the climb through the rain forest having your lunch on route. Dinner and overnight at the first encampment at 2,800 meters (9,186 ft).

Day 2: Umbwe Camp To Baranco Camp
2,800m to 3,900m
9,200ft to 12,800ft
Distance: 5miles / 8km's
Hiking Hours: 5hours
Habitat: Semi-Desert
After breakfast, we leave the glades of the forest and follow an ascending path on the open moorland to the Barranco Hut located at 3,900 meters (12,795 ft). Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 3: Baranco Camp To Karanga Camp

Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you shall leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco wall, to the Karanga Valley (4200m / 13,780ft) compsite

Day 4: Karanga Camp To Barafu Camp
4200m to 4600m
13,800ft to 15,100ft
Distance: 8miles / 13km's
Hiking Hours: 8hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, you leave the Karanga Valley and pass the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. You shall continue to the Barafu Hut, which is located at an altitude of 4600meters (15,092ft). You completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here you shall make camp, rest, enjoy dinner and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are be seen from this position.

Day 5: Barafu To summit and Millennium Camp
4600m to 5895m
(And down to 3100m)

4-5 hours down
Early morning you shall continue on your way to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5985meters (19,636ft). This part of the climb takes about 4 hours. It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of hiking day. You will need to take clothing for both extremes with you. At Uhuru peak, you would have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. From the summit, you shall now make your descent continuing straight down to the Millennium Camp site at 3300m. Dinner and overnight in Camp.

Day 6: To Mweka Gate to Moshi
3100m to 1680m
10,200ft to 5500ft
About 4-5 hours
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. One shall need Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will nice to wear. (Keep rain great and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will ready at Mweka Village to drive you back to the Hotel in Moshi. Dinner and overnight.
